NY Philharmonic Orchestra Rehearsal
A couple weeks ago I attended a rehearsal of the NY Philharmonic Orchestra led by Alan Gilbert and with Itzhak Perlman performing. The treat was two pieces by Respighi and five of Perlman’s favorites. An unexpected extra was a quick run through of part of another program’s featured symphony.
This wasn’t an exclusive insider event, but a regularly scheduled open rehearsal with tickets for sale at the box office for $18.00. You can get tickets on line at nyphil.org. I’ll be going a few more times – next will be Nov 20 with music by Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Dvorak.
A week later I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While the admission price is a modest contribution, I am a member and a big benefit is that I did not have to wait on any line to get in. I just walked up to the front information desk flashing my membership card and was handed that day’s admission button.
Contributing to Channel 13 PBS is heartwarming for me. And a bonus is a membership card that is good for free admissions at dozens of museums and other places of interest in and around NYC. While the free admission is nice, looking at their listing reminds me of some places I haven’t been to in a while and they become my next “go-to’s.”
You need to live in or around Manhattan to get the above benefits, but regardless of where you reside, there are similar benefits available to you in your local areas. Make the small effort and check them out!
