Based in the firm's Whippany, NJ office, Tom is a licensed certified public accountant in the state of New Jersey and has over 45 years of experience helping family-owned and closely-held businesses, in a variety of industries, manage the challenges of growth, cash flow and organizational restructuring. He has provided these companies and their owners with assistance on such matters as mergers and acquisitions, financings, cost control, management succession and IPOs.
Tom has dedicated the past 35 years serving the entrepreneurial community. He is currently an adjunct professor at his alma mater, Seton Hall University, where he graduated with a BA degree in Accounting, teaching an introductory graduate school course in entrepreneurial studies, a program he helped create. Tom has received a number of honors from his alma mater, including being inducted into The SHU Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame as a special honoree in 2010 for his part in the creation of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. In 2010, Tom also was named Excellent Adjunct Professor and the Stillman Graduate School Teacher of the Year. In 2008, he was honored with the Stillman School of Business Many Are One Service Award in recognition of his contributions to the entrepreneurial community. In 2006, SHU’s chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (accounting Honor Fraternity) named Tom as their 25th anniversary honoree. In 1991, SHU’s chapter of Beta Alpha Psi honored Tom with its Outstanding Alumnus Award.
Tom has had a diverse background working for two international accounting firms as well as serving as controller for a division of a Fortune 500 company. Prior to joining Withum, Tom was a member of Ernst & Young’s New Jersey Emerging & Growth Markets Group, where he served as the New York metro area practice leader of the CPA Connection Alliance and as one of the leaders of the NY metro area’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year™ award program. He was also president of Basilo Associates and GBT Consulting, Inc., advising owners and managers of emerging growth companies on operational, managerial, succession and general business issues, fundraising and IPOs. Prior to creating Basilo Associates, Tom was the partner-in-charge of the Entrepreneurial Business Services practice for the NY metropolitan area at Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). He worked extensively on the divestiture of AT&T and was responsible for AT&T’s international work. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA).
Tom is also actively involved in the community. He served on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Center of Bergen County (“VCBC”) for 16 years and was Chairman of the Fund Development Committee. He was a member of the Bergen Bike Tour Committee for 15 years, which raises funds for the VCBC and the Tomorrow’s Children Fund. In November 2006, Tom was honored as one of the 40th Anniversary “Heart of Gold” recipients awarded by the Volunteer Center of Bergen County. He has also supported the Tomorrow’s Children Fund, the United Way, Multiple Sclerosis, Association for the Advancement of Mental Health and Muscular Dystrophy. Tom has been involved in various fundraising activities for high school sports and coached boys’ and girls’ youth sports (basketball, softball and baseball) for 25 years. He resides in Bergen County, NJ.
