U.S. Census Data

Every decade the National Archives makes available census data over 70 years old.  Just recently they released the 1940 census information. A close friend from childhood, Ira L. Zuckerman, told me about this and was able to find his grandmother, father, mother, some uncles as well as other family members alive at that time.

Since Ronnie and I will be going to a Yankee game with Ira and Diane (his wife) tomorrow, he searched for some famous 1940 team members and found Joe DiMaggio’s census form showing him with an address of 241 Central Park West, married to his first wife Dorothy (Dorothy Arnold), occupation baseball player and earning $5,000+ in 1939. He also found other famous New Yorkers circa 1940 such as Katharine Hepburn, John D. Rockefeller Jr., J. D. Salinger and Ella Fitzgerald.

He gave me the link to pass on to you: https://1940census.archives.gov/

He also told me he has been using the Ancestry.com website which is indexed and at times, more useful. https://www.ancestry.com/cs/us/newyork?o_xid=21892&o_lid=21892&o_sch=Search

From Ancestry.com he found Babe Ruth in the 1925 New York State Census living at the Concourse Plaza Hotel with his wife Helen (Helen Woodford), occupation baseball player.

Thanks to Ira for this information for those that enjoy researching their roots here in America!

Enjoy! And Let’s Go Yankees!

How Can We Help?
