Medical Alert – The Importance of Advocating for Yourself

Three friends had medical problems due to inattention or disinterest by their physicians. You need to be alert and an active advocate for yourself. Here are the three situations and how to avoid these problems.

  1. A friend that was allergic to the glue used on the tape in certain operations told her surgeon, who noted it on the chart. When the operation was completed, that glue was used, and she had a terrible allergic reaction. She is OK now after a couple of bad days.
    • Alert: Do not assume the medical staff will read the chart or remember what the physician might have told them.
  2. An antibiotic that a friend was allergic to and that was prominently noted as such in her medical history was prescribed, and she ended up in the hospital. She is OK now.
    • Alert: Do not assume the prescribing physician will read the chart or remember what you told them.
  3. A friend fainted twice and went to his physician a week later. Pretty scary. After extensive and thorough testing, nothing was found that would have caused him to faint. Out of ideas, it was suggested that he go off one of his medications. This occurred about a year ago, and he hasn’t fainted since, nor has he had any problems because he wasn’t taking the medication that was stopped. He was on that medication for 20 years before then. Question: Why wasn’t that “unnecessary” medication reviewed during that 20-year period?
    • Alert: I suggest that patients inquire their physician about the benefits of continuing their medications at least once every two years (or more often if you want).

Checking up on your finances is just as important as double-checking your medical records. It’s important to be aware of your mental, physical and financial situations. It is in your best interest to ask questions to clarify and confirm. These are three stories that I know about. I am sure there are many more. I posted this as a wake-up message to be alert and an active advocate for yourself.
