IRS Will Provide Refunds Despite Partial Government Shutdown

Despite the partial government shutdown, the Internal Revenue Service confirmed that it will process tax returns beginning January 28, 2019 and provide refunds to taxpayers as scheduled.

Many of the activities at the agency are currently on hold because of the shutdown, including:

  • Processing of Form 1040X amended returns
  • Answering phone calls from the public and tax professionals to answer questions and resolve notices
  • Audit functions and examination of returns

The agency has furloughed 88% of its employees, however, it will soon be recalling a significant portion of its workforce for tax season. Further information on the IRS filing season will be included in an updated FY2019 Lapsed Appropriations Contingency Plan to be released in the coming days.
