How to Pay Federal Taxes When the Federal Government is Closed

Last month the IRS announced the closure of return processing centers across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a consequence of these office closures some IRS services such as processing paper checks have been stalled.Given the IRS’s current limitations taxpayers who need to make tax payments are encouraged to use the IRS’s web-based service, IRS Direct Pay.This secure service can be used to pay taxes for the Form 1040 series or estimated taxes directly from a checking or savings account at no cost to the taxpayer.

Payments made on IRS Direct Pay can be easily tracked by signing up for email notifications.IRS Direct Pay won’t accept more than two payments within a 24-hour period, and each payment must be less than $10 million. For larger electronic payments or business taxes, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) can be used. EFTPS is a free service from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Taxpayers can enroll for EFTPS by visiting EFTPS.gov.
