Women’s History Month 2024: A Spotlight on Career Growth, Advice and Development

It is valuable for people to look at the accomplishments of leaders in their respective fields to gain inspiration, establish goals, and identify strategies for achievement to apply in their own careers. Sometimes, though, this comparison results in frustration and feelings of isolation, as typically, success is only celebrated after the fact. We only see the final destination of great individuals rather than the journey that got them there. We often do not learn about the struggles, hardships, losses, or uncertainties they inevitably face along the way. Nor do we see who may have helped them, pointed them in a new direction, or even provided them with an opportunity for a big break. This is why it is imperative that we share our stories so we can learn from those who have come before us and share advice with those who are up and coming.

One of the primary goals of Withum’s Women in Financial Service Team is to provide a platform for women to do just that. Sharing advice, strategies, and goals for career growth and development enables us not only to learn from one another and celebrate the final destinations but also to be resources for each other along each part of the journey as well.

It is only fitting that during Women’s History Month, we take this opportunity to invite women within the industry to share pivotal moments in their career journeys, the skills they have acquired, and the mutual support they’ve both given and received along the way.

Sharing Our Stories

Zoe Weinberg, Founder and Managing Partner – Ex Ante

“I have always found that the biggest moments of professional growth came from taking a risk or leap of faith in my career. It can be easy to follow the path of least resistance, but there are always those moments when stepping out of your comfort zone leads to the most significant leaps forward.

Embracing challenges and taking calculated risks has been my compass for growth. Whether it was accepting a role that seemed daunting at first or spearheading a project with uncertain outcomes, I’ve always found them to be experiences that expanded my skills but have also cultivated resilience and adaptability.”

Sydney Paige Thomas, Founding General Partner – Symphonic Capital

“The top three skills that women need to continue to cultivate and advance their careers are resilience, proactiveness, and community building. We need resilience because these careers are long and hard. We need proactiveness, unfortunately, because of the bias you will face, which makes it harder for you to get what you deserve. Therefore, you also need to be proactive in getting it yourself. We need community building because you can’t do it alone! Find your people.”

Yana Andrea Klimova, CFO – Thirdsphere

“To continue to grow in your career, it is essential to achieve a balance of drive and self-care, clarity of direction to know where you are going, and to exhibit resilience along the way. Take responsibility, respect others and yourself, be honest and transparent, and hold opinions without impeding listening and learning, curiosity, and creativity.
