This article has been refreshed to include the latest announcement from Intuit about the discontinuation of support and security updates for QuickBooks Desktop 2022 after May 31, 2025, in addition to the previously announced changes affecting QuickBooks Desktop subscriptions that ended September 30, 2024. Below, we outline what the newest updates mean for your business and the steps you can take to transition smoothly.
Intuit’s decision to end security updates for QuickBooks Desktop 2022 after May 31, 2025, creates an opportunity for the millions of small businesses currently using a Desktop version to upgrade to a more modern software solution.
All add-on services will also be discontinued for QB Desktop 2022, similar to what Intuit has done for previous versions that are unsupported and not monitored. There are several options to consider that were not necessarily front of mind or urgent before, that have now become actionable and viable. It is not recommended to continue using your unsupported version of QB, as the loss of your vital accounting records is very real.

What Are My Options?
- Convert QuickBooks Desktop to Online (QBO): Intuit makes it easy to transition to QuickBooks Online (QBO). QBO offers several advantages, including accessibility from any device with an internet connection, automatic updates, robust 3rd party software integrations, no more backups or servers, etc. Whether you're considering converting QuickBooks Desktop to Online this will be the best option for most businesses with little downtime and learning curve.
- Rethink your entire accounting system: Businesses change and grow over time and their accounting needs do as well. With this announcement and the necessary action, it is a great time to consider moving to a more robust accounting software such as Sage Intacct, Microsoft Business Central or NetSuite. These mid-tier software's offer greater controls, advanced reporting and what is often the biggest reason for leaving QB: consolidation of financial reports. We would love to discuss how your accounting needs have changed and use our experience to help you get the most out of your accounting software and reporting. What We Know About the QuickBooks Desktop Discontinuation
In addition to the discontinuation of QuickBooks Desktop 2022 support and security updates after May 31, 2025, Intuit previously announced that, as of September 30, 2024, it would no longer sell new subscriptions for products including:
- QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll
These changes did not affect current subscribers of these products, nor did they impact QuickBooks Enterprise. However, businesses that used non-subscription versions of QB Pro, Premier, or Mac, or those that recently adopted a desktop subscription, were directly affected.
For businesses still relying on unsupported versions, it’s not advisable to continue using outdated software due to the potential loss of vital accounting records. Take action now and set yourself up for a smooth transition. Don’t wait until it’s too late! Whether you’re considering converting to QuickBooks Online or rethinking your entire accounting system, Withum is here to help you.
