Within the last week, there’s been an uptick in targeted ransomware attacks on healthcare facilities and hospitals, according to a warning advisory released by the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
In simple terms, ransomware encrypts your data and demands money to get it back. There was a time when getting hit with this type of intrusion was a novelty, but now ransomware has leapt over other types of attacks to become the primary way hackers generate revenue. Right now, healthcare organizations are one their favorite targets as the industry has typically had a poor reputation for cybersecurity protections and hackers have started to take notice. In recent months, hackers have been conducting sophisticated phishing campaigns to take healthcare industry data hostage. The phishing attacks have been so ubiquitous and effective the FBI is having a difficult time keeping up.
