Federal Audit Clearinghouse Cyber Attack

Earlier this year the Federal Audit Clearinghouse (“FAC”) experienced a cyber attack when hackers accessed filers’ information. If you submit an annual report to the FAC, you should have received a letter from the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau informing you of an effective cyber attack of the FAC database. The letter explains the security incident and reiterates that much of the information hacked was already public information.

COMPROMISED INFORMATION

Some of the information that was compromised and posted by the hacker(s) public website includes the following:

  • Your name
  • Address provided to the FAC database
  • Email address provided to the FAC database
  • Telephone number provided to the FAC database
  • FAC username
  • FAC masked password

FAC FILING EXTENSION

The FAC has been shut down for almost a month now due to this security incident. While the FAC IT forensic investigation continues, there is no action required by filers at this time. However, there have been concerns over submissions that are coming due. Recently, the FAC issued a formal submission extension that reads as follows:

(put in colored box)“Due dates between 7/22 – 9/30/2015 are extended to 10/31/2015.” The extension should address concerns about December 31, 2014, and other year-end single audit submissions that fall within this due date range.

Once the FAC is back online, you will be forced to change your password. As recommended by the FAC and IT professionals, it is a best practice to regularly change your password.
