A recent federal court ruling has reopened what could be one of the largest refund opportunities from the COVID era. The court held that federal tax deadlines were automatically suspended from January 20, 2020, through July 10, 2023—meaning interest and penalties charged to Cannabis companies during that period may have been improperly assessed and potentially refundable. Refund claims many taxpayers assumed were time barred may still be valid, but the window to act is limited to July of 2026.
