Get to Know Me

Matt Dobson has 15 years of experience in public accounting. He focuses on serving the cannabis industry in addition to providing transaction advisory services. Matt helps cannabis businesses optimize business processes and procedures, including the efficient management and tracking of inventory and allocating operating expenditures in accordance with documented procedures. He also assists with the day-to-day accounting and periodic financial reporting needs of businesses in the industry, helping business owners understand the financial implications of their current model in real time, make better strategic decisions and maximize available cash flows while reducing tax liabilities in the face of stringent limitations on tax deductions stemming from IRC 280E. 

Matt also performs financial statement audits for private companies in a range of industries and has significant experience dealing with complex transactions, including business combinations, employee stock ownership plans, and debt modification. He has worked on a large number of buy-side and sell-side due diligence engagements in a variety of industries, with sale values ranging from $5 million to over $1 billion. He has also spent significant time assisting clients in a consulting capacity, including outsourced accounting and process improvement. 

Through working closely with clients in both audit and transaction advisory roles, Matt helps clients streamline financial reporting and identify opportunities for operational and financial reporting improvements to enhance business performance and results, driving value for stakeholders. 

Internally, Matt supports new software rollouts, training and adoption to improve quality and efficiency in the audit and transaction advisory practices. 

As a Fellow Chartered Accountant in England and Wales and a Certified Public Accountant in the United States, Matt has a broad range of experience in different industries and jurisdictions. Prior to moving to the U.S., Matt worked as an auditor and consultant for a Big Four accounting firm in the British Isles. He continued this role, adding specialization in transaction advisory services, when he moved to Buffalo, NY, in 2013.  

Matt is a licensed certified public accountant (CPA) in New York and a Fellow Chartered Accountant (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales). He is also fluent in French.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys golfing, playing tennis and spending time with his family at Niagara Falls Country Club. In the winter, skiing is his hobby of choice, and he enjoys watching his young children go from tears to smiles as they become more independent on the slopes.
