Beginning in the 2017 tax year, New Jersey will allow an additional $3,000 exemption for military veterans. An individual is eligible to claim this exemption on their state income tax return if they are a military veteran who was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States on or before the last day of the tax year.

This exemption is available to a New Jersey resident or nonresident taxpayer and/or spouse, but excludes dependents, and may be taken in addition to the other exemptions that they are eligible to claim.

In order to qualify, the taxpayer and/or spouse must submit with their tax return a copy of their Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (Form DD-214) or any other official documentation listing the characteristic of his or her discharge.  This exemption can also be certified prior to filing the tax return by submitting a Veterans Exemption Submission Form along with the DD-214 or other applicable documentation to the New Jersey Division of Taxation.  Certification of this exemption is only required in the first year that it is claimed.
