An unusual thing happened and keeps happening. When I buy a business book that I want to learn something from and put it under my pillow, nothing happens.

Nothing also happens when I don’t read it. I really need to read it to get something out of it. There is no magic pill or potion, no osmosis, no special sauce and no special trick. I need to read it.

I have many books like this. I want them and I buy them, and they sit in a pile. Sometimes I read one, or two or three, but never all of them. My interests are too broad, and there are too many books…and so little time to read them all.

However, when I read one there is a transformation of some of the knowledge of the writer to me. I learn what I want to or need to, and that’s a good feeling.

If I then put the book “under my pillow,” my subconscious works miraculously and I sometimes wake up in the morning with another idea or application that I could use for one of my clients. Actually, I do that a lot. After I read a book and learn something new and it then sits on my mind. When I go for my daily walk in my neighborhood [the treadmill was in the gym I haven’t been to since mid-March] I think about applying my new-found knowledge to various clients and would you believe, I come up with ideas or solutions for them! “Under the pillow” is an euphemism for putting and keeping something in the back of your mind

I have discovered that focusing in on a client’s problem or issue works wonders. For some period it takes up a slot in my mind and a lot of what I do somehow relates to that problem. I’ve been doing this for so long it has become second nature for me, and I sometimes think this is a normal way of working for everyone, not just me. But it might not be, so that is why I am sharing this technique here. Maybe or maybe not for you, but this is what works for me.

However, I do know one thing for certain that applies to everyone. If you do not read the book, you will not learn anything from it.
