John Merchant, CPA, CFE, CFF, is an emeritus partner at Withum with over 40 years of experience. John has experience with reviews and quality control of engagements for a variety of organizations including, international labor organizations and employee benefit plans, trade and membership organizations, for-profit corporations and charitable foundations. He is suited for specialized projects in areas such as forensic auditing. Prior to joining the Firm, John was a partner at Bond Beebe, which joined with Withum in August 2017.
John has extensive experience conducting forensic audits of labor organizations and evaluating their compliance with the reporting and disclosure rules of the LMRDA and the IRS. He is also involved in taxation research and filings for corporate and not-for-profit clients. In addition to his responsibilities at the Firm, John has taught accounting at George Washington University and the George Meany Center for Labor Studies in connection with the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist series, a ten-part program that was developed at the Wharton School. He currently teaches continuing education classes for the Virginia Society of CPAs.
John holds a Master of Forensic Studies degree from Stevenson University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE).
