IRS Tax Tips and Electronic Subscriptions for Taxpayers

During the summer of 2016, the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) began working to provide additional information to taxpayers through their new Tax Tip and subscription services.

IRS Tax Tips

The IRS released IR-2016-95 which encourages taxpayers to subscribe to the IRS Tax Tip email service. Beginning July 1, 2016 the IRS began offering “Summertime Tax Tips,” a series of short articles which offer taxpayers helpful consumer tips.

The goal of the IRS is to provide taxpayers with useful information (in both English and Spanish) that will assist taxpayers in getting a head start on this year’s taxes. Taxpayers who subscribe receive a new Tax Tip three times a week during the early summer months and will continue to receive them each weekday during the tax filing season.

In addition, IRS Tax Tip 2016-11 is currently accessible on www.irs.gov. This Tax Tip provides “10 Great Reasons to use IRS.gov”. These include the following:

  1. Get Answers to Your Tax Questions;
  2. Get Forms and Publications;
  3. Use IRS Free File;
  4. Get Information on the Affordable Care Act;
  5. Check on Your Refund;
  6. Use IRS Direct Pay;
  7. Apply for an IRS Payment Plan;
  8. Check Out a Charity;
  9. Calculate your Tax Withholding; and
  10. Get a Transcript.

The IRS offers a wide array of topics and presents the information in a way to that is easy for users to understand. Taxpayers are able to receive these Tax Tips automatically through a free service on www.irs.gov.

News Releases, Tax Law Updates & General Tax Information

IRS Newswire – News releases as they are issued by the IRS National Media Relations Office in Washington, DC.

Guidewire – Notifications by email when the IRS issues advance copies of tax guidance such as Regulations, Revenue Rulings, Revenue Procedures, Announcements and Notices.

Alerts from Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) – Sign up to receive up-to-date email alerts from OPR. Subscribers will be notified by email regarding:

  • OPR disciplinary actions;
  • Press releases;
  • News items;
  • Rules governing those who practice before the IRS and related updates; and
  • Educational information about OPR, its mission and priorities.

e-News for Businesses

e-News for Small Business – Provides information about IRS small business and self-employed outreach products and programs.

e-File News for Large Businesses – Provides information about IRS Large and Mid-Size Corporations’ outreach products and programs.

FATCA News & Information – Receive news and information updates from the IRS concerning the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).

e-News for Tax Exempt & Government Entities

Exempt Organization Update – For tax professionals and representatives of tax-exempt organizations from the IRS. Receive email updates and alerts from the IRS about developments in exempt organizations tax law and regulations, upcoming IRS training and events, and other information.

Federal State & Local Governments (FSLG) – This newsletter is issued periodically during the year and provides information about current developments and upcoming events of interest to government entities.

Indian Tribal Governments News – Receive email updates about recent developments regarding Indian Tribal Governments.

Tax Exempt Bond Community Update – For tax professionals and representatives of tax-exempt issuers. Receive email updates and alerts from the IRS about developments in the tax law and regulations applicable to tax-exempt bonds, updates to our website, and other information.

The IRS website has become an extremely useful tool and valuable resource for taxpayers and tax professionals. Taxpayers should take full advantage of the website to gain useful knowledge and expertise in various tax related areas.
